Our History

Founder of Fei Fah: Mr Loh Yung Chai

Starting out as a family business manufacturing external analgesic products, Fei Fah expanded its presence in Hong Kong and Malaysia by setting up offices in 1999 and 2007 respectively.

Fei Fah’s founder, Mr Loh Yung Chai, was the first generation of the Chinese diaspora to the Malayan peninsular. He was a Chinese physician and the only individual who provided affordable medical care to a rural town community in Pahang, Malaysia since the mid-1930s. During those times, there were no proper roads to the city and modern healthcare was not only a luxury but non-existent.

Mr Loh toiled from early dawn to dusk every day to tend to the sick. He knew that he was not running a business to care for his customers. Instead he learnt that it was his call to reduce pain in the lives of ordinary people. His daily encounters with sufferings, births and deaths, gave him a deeper understanding of humanity. As a Chinese of Hakka descendant, the virtues of savings and frugality influenced him to contribute much of his accumulated wealth back to the community by building schools, hospitals as well as helping those with special needs. Even though he had never been on a plane or travelled around world, he found that doing community work was more meaningful and gratifying to him.

Founder’s Elder Son: Mr Lau Keong Ying

Mr Lau Keong Ying was the founder’s eldest son. For much of Mr. Lau’s adulthood, the relationship with his father was more like best friends– the son being very respectful and more talkative when they were together, and the father enjoying every moment he spent with the son. The founder had a strong influence on Mr Lau’s character since young and even later on in his career when he extended the founder’s legacy to Singapore by setting up Fei Fah Drug Store. Fei Fah Drug Store was founded in 1950 at 155 South Bridge Road, in the heart of Singapore's Chinatown. The shop served Chinese customers within South East Asia, seafarers and the local community by retailing traditional Chinese herbs and off-the-shelf modern medicine. It was a well-known corner medical shop in that area.

Fei Fah Electric Medibalm, an external analgesic balm was developed by Mr Lau as he reckoned that the most immediate pain and suffering could be alleviated by a simple but effective external application. He launched the product in 1970 and the trademark of “Fei Fah” was registered in 1974. Fei Fah Electric Medibalm was first conceptualized by the founder, then developed and realized by Mr Lau. It is the first product of Fei Fah and remains the flagship product till this day.

Current CEO of Fei Fah: Mr Lawrence Lau

Mr. Lawrence Lau, CEO and Managing Director of Fei Fah International Group, was awarded the "Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2010" (hereinafter referred to as "EYA"). EYA has been established for more than 20 years and it is the oldest outstanding achievement in Singapore's history.
